Light & Airy Or Dark & Moody? Let’s Talk Editing

Editing is a *HUGE* part of being a photographer. It sets the tone for a photographers business, and becomes a part of their identity. It can also be hard work. When a photographer is just starting their business they are also trying to find an editing style that speaks to them, as well as their audience (aka their potential clients!)

So, what is my editing style?

If I could only use three words to describe my editing style, I would say “Bight, Airy, and Timeless.”

I consider my editing style to be “true to life” with a little *pop.* When your skin tone, the grass, and the gorgeous dress you’re wearing look exactly how you remember, that’s what helps you hold on to these precious memories. (I just brighten the images up a little bit!) It is the same editing style you see in my blog posts, in my portfolio (basically all throughout my website), and on all of my social media accounts.

Why? Because that is exactly how I would like my photos to look, and I found a lot of you like it too! But, not everyone love that light & airy look.. And that is totally okay! Getting professional photos is a big deal (especially when it comes to freezing special moments in time!), and you deserve photos that you absolutely love. That’s why I have decided to branch out.

I have officially mastered the craft of my signature Light & Airy style, but my passion for photography is so strong that I decided it’s time to expand my knowledge, and appeal to a larger audience. (While still offering my signature editing style.) Wether you love Light & Airy or Dark & Moody (or anything in between!), I’m here to deliver a gallery that you will fall in love with!

Now, let’s address the “in between.” What even is that? Well, that is all of the different editing styles ranging from light, bright, & airy, all the way to dark, moody, and mysterious while still balancing all the technical things about photography, such as exposure. There are styles referred to as “boho” that offer a higher contrast look, while still being bright and welcoming. Then you have what is sometimes called “luxury” or “black.” These styles tend to be almost completely monochrome, with colors like red and gold being the center focus, as well as the subjects natural skin tone. Keep in mind there are still tons of styles I haven’t mentioned. This blog post would become a novel if I went into detail about every editing style out there!

But, I would like to touch on one more tedious detail… Every single style has it’s own variations. There are darker, warmer, and/or cooler Light & Airy styles, and there are lighter, creamier, and/or cooler Dark & Moody styles. There are *so many* options out there to choose from, but it is up to you to find the photographer, and style, that speaks to you best.

Okay, okay.. You get the point. I just gave you a *ton* of information, that might not have made any sense. Please don’t feel too overwhelmed. I am here to help you find the editing style of your dreams! Also… There’s a bonus! (At least I think it’s a bonus.) When you book with me at Captured by Riley Marie, you not only get a full gallery of the editing style you’ve hand picked, you also get the full gallery in my signature editing style. Talk about variety!

Here’s a quick fun fact before you go: I am currently editing a dreamy session in not one, but TWO editing styles. So, keep an eye out for that blog post, it’s going to be a good one!

Okay, I’ll stop now. I just get so excited! Now that you have completed your official crash course in editing styles, it’s time to book! I hope to hear from you soon!
